In 1952 under the leadership of Prof. Pauls Galenieks the Latvian branch of All-union Botanical Society was established. It can be considered as an ancestor of the Latvian Botanical Society that was set up in 1992.
During its existence the Latvian Botanical Society has united botanists from Latvian higher educational establishments and research institutions.

In the meetings members have discussed lists of protected plants that should be included in the Red Data Book and the Regulations of Government, as well the everyday tasks of botanists, research results and reports on participation in symposia, conferences and fields trips abroad.

Members of the Latvian Botanical Society have taken an active part in the organisation of field trips - excursions of the Baltic botanists that took place in Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia.

From 1954 to 1994 in total 21 such excursions - field trips were organised. Participants got to know the flora of different regions of the Baltic States as well as discussed the results of botanical research and methodological questions.
